A good ol fashioned modern SKIN CRAWLER

Slither (2006)
Directed by James Gunn. With Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks, Michael Rooker, Don Thompson.

In the tradition of The Blob and Invasion Of The Body Snatchers comes Slither, which in my opinion is a blend between the classic gory horror classics we know and love and modern gore core comedy. Slither is a must have DVD for any collection, something that you could sit down and watch with the your 13 year old kid and get some frights, have a laugh and laugh at each other getting grossed out. Angry disgruntled half squid older Husband for the win! (Michael Rooker)

At first look this Movie appears classic. The slimey reddish slugs on the front cover were what initially pushed me away from watching the flick. I never was fan of Arachnaphobia or infestation movies such as birds. When I first saw it on the shelves of arguably New Zealands best video stores shelves (Ponsonby road Video Easy) I put it in the lame category... the old ‘judging by the cover’ for the fail. Instead I think I picked up one about Snoop Dogg as  a vampire, wtf was that about?!?. Fail. I should have instead trusted that the ‘store of stores’ which very rarely steered me wrong would not have bought multiple copies of a ‘crap cliché swarm flick’. I guess the thought of the Director and writers putting all the emphasis on a developing relationship midst the attacking hordes of small creatures which can only be killed by taking out a pivotal creature (which usually is unexplainably more intelligent) or seeing them venture in the heart of a hive to torch it, really didn’t have any appeal.

Without putting too many spoilers out there... THIS is a classic flick. It is one which glides between beautiful puppetry, and cgi and fluid as if Peter Jackson and Weta had recreated the Labrinth with the original puppet and model makers alongside. The worms crawling were probably the best cgi I have seen on a slimey monster ever... in movement and appearance as well as shadowing and colour matching with original shots. The SFX company  who worked on Slither now sit beside WETA and Bays studios in my top sfx production companys list. Well done.

`Acting and casting is also as good as you could ever hope to see in such a setting. It is nice to see some familiar faces and to see some new comers too. The Mayor (Gregg Henry)is worth a mention in this too... he pulls out some great one liners. (Michael Rooker) is perfect in the role of the villian/monster and is looking cut as anything for his age too! Good work old fulla! He plays the needy aging insecure redneck husband to great effect. The Cop (Natan Fillion) also seen in movies such as(Serenity and Serenity) and the Heroine (Elizabeth Banks) also have a playful dynamic... sometimes you feel sucked into the setting through its punishing cliché ‘could have been, sweet heart love” only to get pulled back out by creative writing and twists in the plot... IE her rekindling the love for her Husband squid... who fights against killing her after he receives some alien Viagra upgrade.

On the whole... A humourous blend of brutally beautifull and witty cult horror comedy that revamps the alien invader theme well, polished off with great acting and comedic replay value, rock solid special effects and painfully dry/cliché  yet well balanced humour make this movie a MUST SEE.
Slither is the best ‘bad good’ movie I have seen in a long time.

“Soo good, Soooo bad”...”so good”.

Seven and a half ‘Stand By Me Leeches’ ouf of eight.

Some slimey gory funny goodness, worthy of a late Friday night popcorn and chips extravaganza!
